Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions


The Master's seminar is part of the research phase in which the students work on a current topic in the field of physics of nuclear-, particle- and astrophysics. The topic and methodology characterize the qualification profile of the study program in a special way. Possible areas of research are based on the main research areas of the Department of Physics and the special offer of the professors. Topics are e.g. astro- and astroparticle physics, experimental nuclear physics, experimental particle physics, theoretical particle and high-energy physics, as well as fundamental plasma physics. Both experimental and theoretical topics are possible, ranging from the physical basics to physical issues in manufacturing and measurement processes.

The Master's seminar is an induction to the area in which the students want to write their Master's thesis. It provides a deepening of the knowledge within the scope of a further professional specialization. The students get an overview of the current state of research in the selected topic area.

Learning Outcome

After passing the Masters Seminar, students are able

  •  to understand the current state of art of the research in a limited field in the area of nuclear-, particle- and astrophysics.
  •  to evaluate the position of his intended Master's thesis in the field of research,
  •  to analyse different methods from its research area and their possibilities (advantages and disadvantages).


Admission to the module requires that all additional module requirements that are specified in the letter of admission to the Master's programme in Physics (Physics of Condensed Matter) have been met.

It is recommended that at least 40 ECTS from the modules of the specialization phase in the Master's programme Physics (Physics of Condensed Matter) have been successfully completed.

Learning and Teaching Methods

A major part of the Master's seminar is spent on independent literature studies, in particular current scientific publications. On the basis of literature named and made available to them by their supervisor, they also do their own literature research. At the same time, students are involved in a research group, which gives them the opportunity to discuss directly with their supervisor or with other members of the research group and clarify any questions of understanding that arise.

The current work of the students is presented and discussed in the weekly group seminar. In this way, the students also get to know the neighbouring topics in their research area and are able to establish cross-references.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

By a presentation (30 minutes) and a discussion it is evaluated to what extent the students can understand and classify the current state of research in the selected field.

The exam will takeen the form of an ungraded academic achievement.

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
