Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions
The seminar provides a broad overview of current research topics spanning all areas of physics. The speakers are all internationally leading figures and they have been asked to include in their talk a signiificant amount of introductory materials such as to make the context and broad relevance of their topic understandable for students.
By attending the "meet the speaker" event and the following colloquium students will learn how to enter into scientific dialog, both in a 1:1 scenario with experienced sceintists and also in a larger group e.g. following the talk. They will learn how to engage in lively scientifc debate and moreover will receive information about current hot topics in basic research throughout physics by engaging with experts in specific research fields. Students will be in a position to make an informed choice regarding the possible direction of their future study and research.
No special pre-requisites are necessary - just come with curiosity and the desire to hear and learn something new each week. Participation can also be distributed over multiple semester. The Munich Physics Colloquium is designed for a broad audience of physicists who are non-expert. Thus, the MPK is most suitable for BSc. students in Semesters 4 onwards and Master students.

Learning and Teaching Methods
Prior to each talk, students should do their own research about speaker (e.g. via their webpage) and document the results of their reserach. Typically, this will involve exploring the research topics that are pursued in the group / institute of the speaker and attempting to place these topics into the context of their own studies of physics.
In order to be awarded the ECTS points, students must adequately prepare themselves before the seminar, effectively take notes during the seminar and engage in active participation. Active participation involves attending both the "meet the speaker" event before the talk and the subsequent talk. Students should prepare questions or points of discussion to open a dialog with the speaker. Moreover, students have to take notes effectively about the content of the talk and engage in discussion with the speaker after the talk. This "engagement" with the speaker can either take place in plenum via e.g questions after the talk or 1:1 with the speaker afterwards.
The ECTS points can only be awarded by students who have attended a minimum of 10 colloquiua. The attendance can be distributed over several terms.
