Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

These days, many biomedical problems require a multidisciplinary approach. In addition to developing new materials, current research also focuses on devising new methods for the production and characterization of such novel materials.
In this seminar, new materials and techniques are discussed which are applicable to biological or medical problems. In addition to current research topics from the field of "tissue engineering" also examples from "lab on chip" applications or additive manufacturing approaches are discussed.
The active contribution of the students, i.e. delivering a 30-minute presentation and participating in the discussion rounds following each presentation, is a key aspect of the seminar.
The number of participants is limited to 10 students.

Learning Outcome

After successful participation in the module Biomedical Materials and Technologies the students are able to prepare a presentation on a topic from the field Materials Science / Biomedical Engineering and to deliver this presentation in English. They will also be able to perform a literature search and apply modern presentation methods.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

The students autonomously perform a literature search on a given topic related to Biomedical Materials and Technologies and then prepare a 30-minute presentation in English. They also prepare a written one-page summary on the topic of the presentation.
Grading will take into account how well the topic has been researched by the student as well as the quality of the slides and the presentation given. In addition, the content of all presentations will be the basis for a 20-minute written exam at the end of the seminar which will also contribute to the final grade.
Weights: hand-out: 15%, presentation 70%, exam 15%

Exam Repetition

The exam may be repeated at the end of the semester.
