Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions


- Introduction - Application examples fixed/rotary wing aircraft (civil and military)
- Historical development of fixed-wing aircraft: civil and military aviation
- Aircraft (fixed wing): overview, fundamentals of aircraft aerodynamics (lift, drag, stability), mass estimation, fundamentals of propulsion integration, point and mission performance.
-Historical development rotorcraft
-Other topics in the field of rotorcraft
- Aviation safety
- Programmatics, systems: programatics, assemblies, systems (capabilities, functionalities, realization).

Learning Outcome

After participation, students will be able to understand the aircraft as a central element of air transport and how it works (both rotorcraft and fixed-wing aircraft). Students will be able to apply simple methods to analyze rotorcraft and fixed wing aircraft in terms of their essential characteristics. They will also recognize basic interrelationships and modes of operation of systems and assemblies.
Other lectures offered at ILR in the areas of the topics covered are suitable for in-depth study.

Learning and Teaching Methods

In the lecture, the course content is taught by means of oral presentation and blackboard writing. A script in the form of a collection of slides is made available to the students (as pdf and in paper form). In the exercise, the acquired basic knowledge is applied and deepened in practical calculation tasks. Details of the exercises are available to the students. Students are expected to take notes in the exercise. Individual help can be given in the corresponding office hours.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

The module is examined in a written 90-minute exam. The exam is divided into two parts, the fixed-wing part and the rotorcraft part, which are handed out and collected separately and each have a processing time of 45 minutes.

Students must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the following topics by answering knowledge questions/computational problems:

Fixed wing part:
- Historical development of fixed wing aircraft: civil and military aviation.
- Basics of aircraft aerodynamics: lift, drag, stability
- Weight and masses
- Basics of flight propulsion
- Mission and point performance
- Aircraft systems and programatics

Rotorcraft part:
- Fundamentals of flight physics
- Design
- autorotation
- rotor dynamics
- Safety in air traffic

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
