Nonlinear continuum mechanics is a general theory for the description of continuous bodies - regardless whether they are solids, fluids or gases - subject to forces. Especially it deals with the mathematical description of strains, stresses and the material behaviour of continuous bodies. Thereby it forms the foundation for modles of a variety of technical processes. Content: (1)Introduction into tensor calculus
After successful participation in the course on nonlinear continuum mechanics, studends know how to quantitatively model continous systems subject to the laws of Newtonian mechanics. Furthermore they understand fields such as engineering mechanics and fluid mechanics, which are dealt with in depth in other courses, as special cases of nonlinear continuum mechanic and have the theoretical foundation for advanced courses in computational mechanics such as the course "Nonlinear finite elements"
Axioms of Newton mechanics and basics of linear algebra; basic knowledge in engineering mechanics is recommended, but not imperative
Courses and Schedule
Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics

Learning and Teaching Methods
Oral presentation with tablet PC, especially important content is written on the tablet PC during the lecture so that students can transcribe them to the empty boxes in their lecture notes. Exercises deal with examples and demonstrate solution strategies for typical problems in nonlinear continuum mechanics. Important aspects of the lecture are emphasized. In addition to that volontary homework sheets with solution can be downloadad. All slides from the presentations in lecture and exercise can be downloadad
Oral presentation with tablet laptop, lecture notes with boxes to be filled during the lecture, teaching material can be downloaded
(1) lecture notes with references to standard literature in the field of nonlinear continuum mechanics
Description of exams and course work
The examination is taken in written form (90 min) and consists of a mixture of knowledge requests and arithmetic problems, which test the understanding of special phenomena and the capability of the application of special methods for the quantitative description of nonlinear continuum mechanics. The whole content of the lecture is subject of the exam.
Allowed aids will be announced during the lecture.
There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
