Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions


After an overview of the tasks of vehicle aerodynamics the most important aerodynamic basics for the aerodynamic design of a vehicle are presented. The context with the driving performances, the driving safety and the driving comfort are explained. Furthermore the most important methods for fluid simulation are presented.
An overview of the fluid- and pressure field and the resultant air resistance at the vehicle is given. The partial resistances occurring at the vehicle are shown and the possibility for detail optimization. In detail the operating mode of output assistances as foils, spoilers, ground effect and diffusors at high efficient vehicles are treated. Furthermore the aerodynamics of utility vehicles and rail vehicles and the aerodynamics of train-tunnel-systems are descripted. Accompanying to the lecture we offer exercises to some topics in the wind tunnel.

Learning Outcome

After having participated successfully at the module course the student has knowledge of the basic terms of aerodynamics of ground vehicles, of the fluid procedures at cars and utility vehicles and the aerodynamic forces and moments acting at a vehicle and the possibilities to reduce the fluid resistance also the possibility to reduce the Micro shock waves at tunnel drives and train meetings. He knows the methods of form optimization regarding the resistance reducing and the driving dynamics. He is able to follow the aerodynamic development strategy in vehicle design and can transfer the aerodynamic development targets in the future industrial area in the field of vehicle production

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

The exam will take place in a written manor. In the exams should be proofed that a problem can be recognized in limited time and without auxiliary means and ways to a solution can be found. The exam questions cover the whole lecture material. The answers require partly own formulations partly crossing of given multiple answers. Moreover short calculation exercises are given.

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
