Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

Engineers in industry and science must be able to plan and execute projects successfully. Various systems engineering methods have been developed in recent decades for the management of complex, interdisciplinary tasks. These methods and processes can be applied in all areas of industry and science.

The lecture includes: System definition, mathematical and conceptual foundations, modeling and simulation of systems, system optimization by linear and dynamic programming, evaluation methods, foundations of decision theory and systems engineering management. Furthermore, methods for planning, monitoring and executing projects with respect to technology, time and cost are covered. The various methods are illustrated and verified in exercises with examples from the aerospace sector, general mechanical engineering, transportation systems and safety engineering.

Learning Outcome

After participating in the Systems Engineering module, students are able to understand and evaluate complex technical systems. Furthermore, the students are able to analyze and evaluate technical problems independently and to develop their own solution proposals in order to solve different problems from practice. In addition, after completing this module, students will be able to independently evaluate projects, identify their success factors and take measures for their successful completion.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

In a written examination (90 min), the contents taught are to be applied to various problems from the lecture and exercise. The written exam is divided into two parts. In the first part of the exam, theoretical basics from the lecture are tested (question part). In the second part, practical problems, mainly from the exercise, are solved computationally (calculation part).
A non-programmable calculator and a dictionary for foreign students are permitted as aids.

Current note in view of the restricted attendance due to the CoViD19 pandemic: If the framework conditions (hygiene, distance rules, etc.) for an attendance examination are not available, the planned examination form can be changed to an online-based written or oral distance examination in accordance with §13a APSO. The decision on this change will be announced as soon as possible, but no later than 14 days before the examination date by the examiner after consultation with the responsible examination board.

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
