Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions


The module Aerodynamics of Aircraft I focuses on the basics of the calculation and the analysis of the aerodynamic forces acting on aircraft. Thus, it belongs to the application oriented engineering studies. Based on Aerodynamics of Aircraft I there are continuative modules provided. Content: (1) Basic principles and fundamental terms, (2) mission and flight mechanical aspects, (3) Potential flow, (4) Integral equation for two-dimensional lifting surfaces, (5) Theory of airfoils and systematics, (6) Theory of finite wings, (7) Airfoil design and optimization, (8) Experimental aerodynamics.

Learning Outcome

After successful participation in the module, the student is able to:
- understand and characterize subsonic flow physical phenomena of airfoils and wings
- understand fundamental theoretical models of fluid mechanics and aerodynamics
- comprehend and utilize the potential-theoretically calculation for airfoil (thickness and lift theory) and wing (lifting-line method)
- determine airfoil and wing aerodynamics for subsonic conditions with this calculation method
- identify aerodynamic parameters by requirements from mission and flight mechanics
- be familiar with airfoil systematic descriptions
- comprehend the phenomena relevant for airfoil design
- put requirements for experimental aerodynamics using wind tunnels in the right perspective"

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

The examination consists of a two-part written exam (90 min). By means of this exam the candidate needs to show, that he/she is able to recognize a problem and to find a way to solve the problem. The exam spans all subjects, which are presented in the module. Factual and contextual knowledge are examined in the first part of the exam, which is carried out without records. Problem solving competence has to be shown in the second arithmetical part.

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
