Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

Mathematics in early civilisations; the Greek contribution (necessity of proof); rise and fall of mathematical knowledge during the Middle Ages; from introducing infinity to the invention of calculus; from solving equations to the first steps of modern algebra; problems in the foundations of mathematics in the 19th century

Learning Outcome

After successful completion of the module the students know some of the most important facts and developments in the history of mathematics.
