Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

Generation and measurement of high voltages, electrostatic fields and field stress control, electrical breakdown in gases, breakdown in solid and liquid dielectrics, flashover along interphases, partial discharges, transients on transmission lines

Learning Outcome

At the end of the module students are able to apply the relevant knowledge concerning the generation and measurement of high AC, DC and impulse voltages. Electric field distributions can be calculated. The discharge processes in gaseous, liquid and solid dielectrics as well as partial discharge processes are understood and travelling wave phenomena can be analyzed. Thus, the students are able to design and test high voltage insulation systems and apparatus.

Learning and Teaching Methods

In addition to the lectures there will be tutorials. Several relevant methods such as different simulations and models (e.g. field distribution in high voltage bushing, dimensioning of high voltage generators and calculation of the impulse voltage curve) will be used in order to solve the exercises by means of calculation. The applied method of teaching is to deliver lectures and to assist in solving exercises.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

Students demonstrate their ability to dimension high AC, DC and impulse voltage generators and measurement devices, to calculate electric field distribution in technical arrangements, to explain discharge mechanisms in gaseous, liquid and solid dielectrics and to explain and analyze partial discharge phenomena in electrical insulations and travelling wave phenomena on electrical lines in the course of a written exam (60 min).

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
