Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

The seminar is intended for students interested in the field of optoelectronics. The module will consist of discussions of current topics in optoelectronics research with a particular focus on novel semiconductor light sources and photonic integrated circuits as well as on novel applications of optoelectronic devices. The course will start with several lectures discussing examples of optoelectronic devices under development and emerging applications of optoelectronic devices. A lecture and reading materials will also be given on how to write scientific conference proceedings papers and adhere to the academic code of conduct as well as on how to effectively present scientific results to the professional audience. Each module participant will then identify a recent novel optoelectronic device or application reported in peer-reviewed scientific journals, read and comprehend the relevant journal articles, and summarize the key results in a written report that follows the SPIE conference proceedings template and present them in a Power Point presentation to the audience. All module participants are expected to actively participate in the discussions that follow the presentations.

Learning Outcome

Upon successful completion of the module the students are able to identify current topics in optoelectronics research, read and understand scientific publications on the development of modern optoelectronic devices, write conference proceedings papers, and present scientific results to the professional audience.

Preconditions

The module participants are expected to have necessary background knowledge in optoelectronics to understand the operation principles of modern optoelectronic devices. The participants are also expected to be able to search and summarize scientific journal articles in optoelectronics and to have good writing and presentation skills.

Learning and Teaching Methods

Students will listen to the lectures that show examples of current development and emerging applications of modern optoelectronic devices. Additionally, a lecture and reading materials will be given on how to write scientific conference proceedings papers and on how to effectively present scientific results to the audience. Students will read scientific puplications and discuss the content with seminar participants and scientific staff to select one topic for in-depth self-study. The students then prepare a written report following the format of the SPIE conference proceedings (template will be provided) and a Power Point presentation on that topic. The students will present their topics to the audience and answer the questions from the audience.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

The module grade will be based on the evaluation of the following components:
- Written report (40% of the grade)
- 25-minute presentation followed by a 10-minute questions and discussion session. (60% of the module grade)

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
