Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions
Content
After introducing the specific theme of the seminar, scientific articles (publications) which exemplify current devlopments in optical systems will be selected: e.g. 1) microscopic techniques and technologies, 2) special fluorescent agents and semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots), 3) applications in diagnostics and biomedical research. Each student will be a "specialist" on his/her topic in presenting and discussing the selected article with others in English.
Learning Outcome
This seminar should enable students to 1) critically read experimental papers on the selected subject, as well as to analyze the formal structure and evaluate the work, 2) present a summary to others, 3) serach for required literature, particulary using the facilities of the TUM-library, 4) follow up on developments on related fields in the future, 5) more easily communicate in proper scientific English
Preconditions
Basics in physics, general chemistry and biochemistry; written and oral proficiency in English; attendance of the lectures "Biomedical Engineering" or "Elektrische und optische Verfahren in der Bioanalytik"
Courses, Learning and Teaching Methods and Literature
Learning and Teaching Methods
Lecturer: provide a brief introduction to the theme of the seminar; give feedback on the student's presentation and usage of the English language; Student: study scientific article, literature search; reiterate the contents and consluions in English in form of a written handout and in an oral presentaion, discuss the results, the structure of the scientific work and the gain of knowledge;
Media
1) powerpoint presention, 2) handouts, 3) oral presentation by the students, 4) topic-related discussions among the students: i.e. asking, explaining, arguing, 5) Moodle
Literature
Text books, e.g.: 1) Alberts et al. Molecular Biology of the Cell , Garland Science ; 2) F. Lottspeich Bioanalytik , Spektrum Lehrbuch; selected scientific articles according to the theme of the seminar
