Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Approaches to nanotechnology: bottom-up vs. top-down. Characterization and fabrication issues in the nanoscale. Applications of nanotechnology in electronics, optoelectronics, telecommunications, medicine, biology, mechanics and robotics. Overview of nanotechnology programs in USA, Japan and Europe. Economical implications of nanotechnology: R&D in Information-Technology-oriented industries, new start-up companies, venture capitals. As part of the module small projectswill be assigned, selected from a list of topics covering both experimental, computational and economical topics.

Learning Outcome

The course aims at providing an introduction to nanotechnology, and the application in several fields such as e.g. chemistry, medicine, energy, materials, automotive. Coverning the basis of nanostructures and nanosystems.

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.

Condensed Matter

When atoms interact things can get interesting. Fundamental research on the underlying properties of materials and nanostructures and exploration of the potential they provide for applications.

Nuclei, Particles, Astrophysics

A journey of discovery to understanding our world at the subatomic scale, from the nuclei inside atoms down to the most elementary building blocks of matter. Are you ready for the adventure?

Biological systems, from proteins to living cells and organisms, obey physical principles. Our research groups in biophysics shape one of Germany's largest scientific clusters in this area.
