Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

The module introduces the fundamental principles of lasers, and discusses the various types of lasers as well as applications.
- Absorption, spontaneous emission and stimulated emission
- Laser oscillator
- Solid-state/fiber lasers, gas lasers, liquid dye lasers, semiconductor lasers
- Pulsed lasers, mode locking
- Applications

Learning Outcome

The students of this module will
- develop an understanding of the fundamental principles of lasers
- get to know different types of lasers
- gain experience on laser design
- get introduced to applications

Preconditions

Basic knowledge in physics, electronic devices
These modules should be successfully completed before participating:
- Physics for electrical engineers
- Electronic devices

Learning and Teaching Methods

In addition to the individual learning methods of the student, an improved understanding is targeted by performing exercises in individual and group work.

As teaching methods, direct instruction/lecturing is used in the lectures, while the exercises are based on interactive teaching (calculating exercises). The practical course will provide hands-on experience.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work
