Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions


The module offers an introduction to the fundamentals of solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Special emphasis is placed on the quantum mechanical principles of the method. In particular, anisotropic interactions are described quantitatively as well as the theory of decoupling and recoupling, experiments and strategies for mapping spin systems and structure determination in the solid state are explained . In addition basic applications are shown on amyloid fibrils , membrane proteins and soluble large protein complexes .

Learning Outcome

At the end of the module studens are able to understand the basics of solid-state NMR spectroscopy and interpret experiments on their own.

Learning and Teaching Methods

The module consists of a lecture (2 SWS). The content of the course will be taught in lecture , by presentation of the lecture material on the blackboard and projection methods. By asking questions to the students and discussion with the students they are to be specifically excited to content addressing the issues. In exercises specific questions will be discussed with the students and the solutions weill be developed on the board


In the lecture and exercise all important content is presented on the board. In addition, PowerPoint slides are used where appropriate. Important contents of the lecture can be found in a lecture script. To deepen the nomenclature, there is a nomenclaturescript. The scripts, exercise tasks and the corresponding solutions are available on the internet.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

Passing this course and final grading are based on a written exam. Basis for the questions and contents of this written exam is the content of the lecture. Answers can be either free text or multiple choice depending on the question.

Exam Repetition
