Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

This module deals with the concepts of catalysis in the field of homogeneous catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis and biocatalysis. Topics include: thermodynamics and kinetics, interactions and surface chemistry, catalysis via coordination compounds, biocatalysis, acid-base catalysis, metal catalysis, redox reactions, polymerization reactions, transport and reactions in porous catalysts, as well as electrocatalysis and photocatalysis.

Learning Outcome

After completing the module, students will be able to understand the concepts of catalytic reactions and apply them to fundamental issues in the field of homogeneous catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis and biocatalysis.

Preconditions

Knowledge of the following topics of selected courses of the Bachelor's degree Majoring in Chemistry: Knowledge in Physical Chemistry and Physics, Reaction Kinetics and Reaction Engineering; Reaction technique and kinetics; Coordination Chemistry and Molecular Catalysis.

Learning and Teaching Methods

The module consists of a lecture and an exercise in which the contents are conveyed by presentations as well as by blackboard. The presentation is supported by the presence of the presentation copy. The students are encouraged to rework the representation in a timely manner and to discuss open questions in the lecture with the lecturers.

Media

The slides of the PowerPoint presentation are made available to the students as handouts.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

In this module, the review of the learning outcomes will be done via an exam (90 minutes). The exam confirms that the basics of kinetics and thermodynamics as well as catalytic surface reactions are possible. Responses require answers to sketches, calculations, and phrases.

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.

Current exam dates

Currently TUMonline lists the following exam dates. In addition to the general information above please refer to the current information given during the course.
