Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

The module covers the following topics:
• Introduction in fundamentals of environmental chemistry and environmental analytical chemistry
• Fundamentals of wet chemical and instrumental analytical methods
• Principles of relevant instrumental analytical methods (spectroscopy, chromatography, mass spectrometry)
• Sampling techniques and strategies
• sample preparation methods
• Quantification and quality assurance in analytical chemistry
• Selection of suitable analytical methods for various contaminants in case studies

Learning Outcome

The students are able to assess the fundamentals of the environmental analytical chemistry as well as the sources and properties of environmentally relevant contaminants. They understand the prinicples of analytical methods and are able to apply these to select suitable detection methods of contaminants in the environmental compartments water/soil/air.

Preconditions

Grundlegendes Verständnis für Mathematik, Chemie, Physik

Learning and Teaching Methods

The module contains a series of lectures and tutorials. The content is presented in lectures. Students will be encouraged to self-study literature and to examine the content of the topics. Specific questions and case studies will be handled and deepend within the tutorials. Selection of suitable analytical methods will also be trained within the tutorials based on the presented principles of analytical chemistry.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

Examination will be carried out with a presentation of 15-20 minutes via video recording. Based on a case study the students show that they are able to select a suitable analytical process (sampling, sample preparation, measurement method and evaluation) for the detection of contaminants in the environment. They also show that they understand the theoretical principals and applications of environmental analytical chemistry and can depict these.

Exam Repetition

There is a possibility to take the exam in the following semester.
