Content, Learning Outcome and Preconditions

Content

The lecture series Material Science (MS1 & MS2) address all aspects of this topic starting from the basic principles in chemistry and physics. This is followed by a characterization of materials properties and the selection of materials from the engineering point of view. Finally, the application of a wide range of engineering materials is described dedicated to be used as structures or products.
Following the first course, Material Science II is deepening the physical properties of materials. Next the mechanical properties are revealed on the component and structure level - exhibit a transition from the micro to the meso and macro level including a basic understanding of fracture mechanics and material testing.

The course MS2 includes in detail:

3. Physical properties of materials (3.4 optical properties and 3.5 thermal properties; chapters 3.1 to 3.3 are subject to MS1)
4. Properties in regard to engineering applications. Fracture mechanics and material testing.
5. Engineering materials and their properties on the structure and component level (metals, ceramics, materials used in electronic components, polymers, construction materials, composites and fiber reinforced materials, selection of materials in regard to economical and ecological aspects).

Learning Outcome

At the end of the semester, the students are able to choose and employ materials with respect to their intended use as building elements or in construction. For this purpose they are taught the physical, chemical and engineering methods and criteria according to which the properties of materials have to be estimated. The students know the main basic and construction materials as well as the methods to characterise materials and construction elements. Terms such as tensile strength, corrosion resistance, hardness, ductility, brittleness or anisotropy are well-understood and can be assigned to the respective materials.

Preconditions

Attendance at the first part of the two lectures of "Material Science" (Material Science I) is recommended. To participate in the exercise the attendance at the lecture (Materials Science II) is obligatory.

Learning and Teaching Methods

The module consists of a lecture and an exercise. The knowledge of the lecture is imparted by talks and presentations. The students should read an accompanying textbook which can be supplemented by additional literature. In the practical course, the content of the lecture is demonstrated in experimental set-ups.

Module Exam

Description of exams and course work

The written exam at the end of the semester lasts 90 minutes and covers the retrieve of knowledge for the evaluation of material properties and characterization of engineering materials and components within a limited period of time employing methods described but no additional equipment.
Questions regarding the physical properties and engineering materials are evenly distributed and a main focus lies on the construction and interpreting of diagrams. Answering of questions requires partly own formulations and partly marking of given multiple choice answers.

Exam Repetition
