- Femtosecond Sum Frequency Generation (SFG) setup for studying water-solid interfaces during CO2 reduction
- Guided design and implementation of a SFG-Setup for studying water-solid interfaces during CO2 reduction. The quality of the reduction process is strongly dependent on the cation present in the supporting electrolyte. It has been suggested that this observation manifests itself in the concentration and the number of dehydrated cations in the material interface region. A proof for this hypothesis is missing however. The goal of this thesis is to use sum-frequency generation, which is naturally an interface sensitive probing technique, to investigate the binding strength and vibrational spectrum of OH-groups bound to the surface. Information on the temporal evolution of the process is obtained by first pumping the sample with an UV-pulse and probing with the SFG. The SFG is achieved by spatially and temporally overlapping two pulsed laser beams in the sample region, with one of them being an infrared-pulse which is sensitive towards the vibrational modes of water. This project is a cooperation with the group of Prof. Krischer (Nonequilibrium Chemical Physics).
