The in situ combination of different experimental methods provides better access to complex properties. Here, the topography of a surface shall be explored by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and can be directly compared with the spectroscopic information from inelastic light scattering, for example lattice vibrations. Using near-field techniques the two types of information can be obtained from the same location and compared. In this way, lattice distortions and the related strain fields close to twin or grain boundaries can be studied.
