Studying at TUM
Lecturing period
| Winter semester Summer semester |

Examinations normally take place within the two weeks after the lecture period. However, some exceptions may take place.
Specific dates, deadllines and holidays can be found in the TUM website.
Library and study rooms
To access the library, you only need your student card, and to borrow books, you will have to register in the counter to activate your card for this purpose. Here you can check the online catalogue.

Study rooms and study spaces are spread all over the department: the top 3 are an open area near the Medienlabor (room 1112), room 2270 and the main hall.
Computers and WiFi
There are three computer places in the faculty (two CIP pools and few computer in the main hall). WiFi is available in all university buildings in Munich and Garching. To connect to the net, you have to download and install the VPN-Client using your mytum account. Detailed infos follow here (you will need to log-in).

Here you will find the room finder of the physics department.
Activities
Fellow programme
We pursue that every exchange student coming to the physics department has a TUM full-time student as "fellow", who can help her/him with practical and study-related questions. For international master students is this service available upon request.
International Café
This is a project jointly organised by the faculties of Infomatics and Physics. Once per month we meet to learn about and discuss different topics in a cosy atmosphere. The International Café is open to all TUM students: no matter if permanently residing in Germany, just coming for an exchange programme or being an international full-time student.
Do not miss our International Day!!!
TUM international (TUMi): Mentoring and orientation for international exchange and full-time students at TUM
TUMi offers orientation weeks at the beginning of each semester. This includes assistance with administrative issues right after your arrival (registration, residence permit, enrolment, public transport etc.) and a cultural programme, to get to know Munich and the surrounding area. Do not miss their Stammtisch during the semester :-)
Remember to register well in advance to ensure you a place, typically a month before the beginning of lectures!
Sports: TUM Campus in Olympiapark
Their catalogue of activities is available online and as hard copies in our office. You will be able to register in campus during a week at the beginning of the semester or at any time in their facilities in Olympiapark.
Music: Orchestras and choirs
For orchestras and choirs there is plenty of choice within the Universities: Akademischer Orchesterverband München (Universitäts-Orchester); Universitätschor München; Campus-Chor Garching; Garchinger Sinfonieorchester; Sinfonietta, Sinfonieorchester der Münchener Universitäten; Ensemble Sinfonietta Auswahlorchester für Kammermusik; Symphonisches Ensemble München (SEM); Sinfonisches Orchester München-Andechs; and Fraunhofer-Patentstelle für die Deutsche Forschung PST.
Campus Garching
Campus Cneipe
Kneipe in German means pub and the Campus Cneipe is C2 . This is the ideal place to meet after classes for a drink, a snack, some music or even a Pub Quiz!
Address: Lichtenbergstraße 2, 85748 Garching b. München.
MVV Munich Transport
Student discount
The Munich public transport authority (MVV) offers a ticket for students called Ausbildungstarif II, enabling you to use trains, subways, trams and buses between your house and the university at a lower rate.
To apply for this card you need: completed order form (downloadable from the link below), one passport picture, personal ID card or passport, confirmation of enrolment (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung) with the MVV logo and confirmation of current address (either registration certificate from the district administration, Meldebescheinigung, or house contract).
For students with late courses, leaving home after 9 am, the Isarcard9Uhr could be an alternative. With this card you can travel from Monday till Friday between 9 am and 6 am of the next day, and otherwise all around the clock.
MVV Nightlines
When the subway service is over, if you live in Munich you can rely on the night buses. Check their lines and schedules.
Bayern Ticket
Planing an excursion over the weekened? The Bayern ticket might be a good option if you are travelling inside Bavaria. Either as a single ticket or as a group ticket (up to 5 people), it is valid from Monday to Sunday for one day of your choice from 9 am until 3 am of the next day, and on Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays from 0 am until 3 am of the next day.
But be careful, it can ONLY be used on all local trains [Interregio-Express, Regional-Express (RE), Regionalbahn (RB), S-Bahn] and local transport networks [Münchner Verkehrsbund (MVV), Verkehrsverbund Nürnberg (VGN), Augsburger
Verkehrs- und Tarifverbundes (AVV), etc.]. It is better if you ask before!
